When Nathan Mackinnon leaked a picture of his new colored gloves it sparked a whole conspiracy. Are the Avalanche getting a Nordiques themed jersey? Are they going to use those awful stadium series jerseys again? The gloves did look awfully similar to the ones used in the outdoor game. While the gloves may have looked similar, the color was clearly a different shade of blue. So that idea can be thrown in the garbage much like the stadium series jerseys. From the sound of it the Avalanche are going to be getting the Nordiques jersey fans have been hoping for. What’s even better? More teams than just the Avalanche are going to be getting nostalgia jerseys.
The two leaked jerseys from the Flyers and Penguins pay homage to the team’s 80’s and 90’s jersey style. They’re not quite the same, hence the Reverse Retro. But damn are they pretty. The thing is the NHL releases a ton of pretty jerseys that are never worn in games. No matter how good the jersey looks it’s just not the same as the ones that are worn in game. Fans want to wear the same jersey their favorite player does. Simple as that. But from the sound of it these ones are going to be worn in game.
I only report on actual game jerseys, not fan fashion jersey lines. And yes, I am told all teams will be wearing them.— icethetics (@icethetics) October 19, 2020
So these aren’t fan fashion jerseys like the military or cancer awareness jerseys. These are going to be worn in game. Likely only once or twice for special occasions. They’ll probably be used for a rivalry game that has some history to it. But that makes perfect sense. Unique jerseys used in unique games are wildly popular. It doesn’t matter which team is playing in an outdoor game their outdoor game sweater is going to sell like hot cakes. Cause they’re unique, and the game they’re worn in is unique. Which makes the league a butt load of cash. But not every team can play in an outdoor game. One, it would ruin the special flare of having just one or two outdoor games a year. And two, it would be so fucking expensive for the NHL to have every team play an outdoor game.
Every team can’t play an outdoor game, but they can all play a historic rival. Everyone besides the Golden Knights that is. But, a historic rival night with unique game jerseys would be electric. Way less expensive than an outdoor game too.
Imagine Sidney Crosby in a 90’s Penguins sweater flying down the wing against the Flyers.
Or Nathan Mackinnon burning up the ice in a Nordiques sweater against the Red Wings.
Those games would be unbelievably fun. The jerseys would fly off the shelves, making the NHL a ton of money.
The NHL is strapped for cash after this year. No fans in the stands for the playoffs really hurt. So why not cash in on some throwback jerseys? The Stadium Series and Winter Classic jerseys sell great every year. No matter how they look. A throwback jersey that fans have been dying to have is going to sell even better. Considering fan accounts are already making mock throwback jerseys there is no doubt these Reverse Retro jerseys are going to be popular.
